Throughout history there have been numerous cases where conforming has played a huge role in order to survive. Take World War II with the Nazis for example. People conformed to their will because they were either scared, they believed or they wanted to be a part of it.
The people at that time aligned their beliefs, morals and values to match those of the Nazis. There were those who truly believed that Germany should be purified even if that meant trying to massacre an entire population without remorse. There were those who were terrified that if they didn't conform then they themselves would be killed, leaving them to believe that they had no other option than to comply. As well there were those who just simply wanted to belong to something, so they decided to put their minds in the hands of the Nazis.
Much like WWII, the characters in The Handmaid's Tale conformed to the will of their new form of government. But there are characters who decided to take their fate into their own hands. Not everyone in the novel was willing to lay down and let everything come at them. There were those who stood up. They rebelled against their government and met death most of the time, or were just never heard from again. But at least they tried to change the situation that controlled them. They were a group of rebels called the Mayday Resistance. Those who let themselves be ruled usually survived. They went on with their daily lives and allowed themselves to believe that how they were living was right and fair. Not unjust and wrong.
In this story conformity is essential for survival.
In everyday life is conformity necessary? No, I don't believe so. It is up to you whether or not you decide if you're going to dress how your friends are, if you're going to go on to post-secondary because that's what everyone is saying you should do or if you should comply with the other social norms our society has created.
When it comes to survival, then I believe that conformity can certainly be beneficial. But survival is different to many people. If you take what I just said about dressing how you want and going to post-second, for some, those things are essential to surviving.
It depends on your everyday life and how conformity affects your circumstances.
