If the world was run with theocracy, we'd all be living in a dystopian society:
No free will; we'd have the chosen religion forced upon us and we'd have to endure religions being butchered at the governments convenience, ie. picking and choosing what they want and ignoring the rest.
Too much power in one place; no democracy and no room for outside rules, only what was given.
It will keep society at a standstill; it would deny society any advancements for a new future.
If the people have no free will then where will we be? Everyone would conform to whatever the higher power, in this case I am going to use the government, wants. If the chosen religion was Christianity then the government would take fragments from the bible and would proceed to force them upon the people.
I believe that everyone has a right to choose their religion or remain without, but when it is forced on someone who has no interest in that religion then it gets to be a bad situation. Imposing religion on a person takes away their free will, and their right, to choose a religion or to not choose one at all.
In Margaret Atwood's novel The Handmaid's Tale, Atwood created a dystopian society that was run by theocracy. In chapter 15 we see how religion has affected the Handmaid's roles. The Republic of Gilead has chosen certain parts of the bible that condone the behavior and actions done to the Handmaid's, “Then comes the moldy old Rachel and Leah stuff we had drummed into us at the Center. Give me children, or else I die. Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb? Behold my maid Bilhah. She shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children be her.” (pg.110). This part of the bible says that the Handmaid's will lie at the knees of the infertile Wives while the Commanders have intercourse with the Handmaid's in order to give the Wives a child.
With theocracy comes too much power.
In The Handmaid's Tale there are executions that take place and the bodies are hung from the Wall where the citizens can see what happens when you have executed a biblical sin. The government knows that those people who hang on the wall did not do any sin except resist the government. Therefor they must be taken care of before they put their thoughts into others and start an uprising. The government abuses their power by killing those they see as threats to them and their new society.
Society will not have a future, or at least not a decent one, as there will be no advancements for civilization.
Theocracy is a power that is unyielding, demanding of devotion, and unwilling to make any form of progress. In The Handmaid's Tale everything was set for a certain way, a certain routine and if it was altered in any shape then there would be major consequences. Throughout the novel the Handmaid's are not to talk to one another except to exchange pleasantries. They are supposed to be devoted to the cause that brought about this new, better, and safer world for women. There are those they call “The Eyes” who watch and make sure that everything is running smoothly, that no one is speaking out of turn. If anyone were to get caught, then they would be punished and hung on the Wall for all to see. They are made an example of, forcing everyone to live in a certain fear that would halt any progress for a new future.
Theocracy would certainly bring about a dystopian society and take away our free will, place all the power in one area, and remove the opportunity to build a different future.
